Breathing-air systems
A breathing-air system is more than a compressor serial number.
Connect the compressor, filtration, air storage, fill system, test source and service records, with dates, original evidence, deficiencies and next obligations visible together.
Recorded evidence, not a certification. Authorized department personnel decide whether equipment is in service.

System view
One system. Every component. One honest status.
A breathing-air installation is only as ready as its weakest record. FD Maintain links the components of each system and rolls their evidence up honestly: the system is never shown current while one of its components is not.

Why “last PM completed” is not the whole answer
A passing PM and a failed air sample can both be true.
Here is one illustrative system. A list of service dates would call it fine. The system record does not.
| Component or requirement | What the record shows | What FD Maintain shows |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor preventive maintenance | Completed last month by the provider | Current · provider-verified |
| Filters and sorbent | Replaced at that visit | Current · change recorded |
| Breathing-air sample | Lab certificate reports a failure | Deficient · issue open with an owner |
| Corrective service | Scheduled for next week | Work scheduled · not yet proof |
| Retest | Not yet taken | Pending · the system stays not current until a passing retest is on file |
Air-quality results and provenance
Know which lab, which sample point, which result.
Lab certificates stay tied to the compressor they came from, with the result as the lab reported it and the next sample due. A failed sample opens an issue that stays open until a passing retest is on file.

The packs and cylinders the system fills.
Flow tests, repairs and cylinder requalification sit beside the air system that serves them, each with the technician, the date and the basis for the next due date.
See the proof behind a green statusDifferent companies, one system
Your compressor contractor and your air lab, on the same record.
The company that services the compressor and the laboratory that tests the air each contribute their own records, attributed to them. Commissioning, component changes and replacements stay on the system’s history.
- Each provider’s work stays attributed to that provider.
- Component replacements keep the system history intact.
- Repair patterns feed the replacement plan.
Good questions
A few things worth knowing.
Does a passing air test put the system back in service?
No. A passing result is evidence. Authorized department personnel decide operational status, following the manufacturer’s instructions and your procedures; FD Maintain records that decision and who made it.
Our air storage vessel is small. Does the pressure-vessel inspection apply?
It depends on your jurisdiction, vessel specifications and any applicable exemptions. Keep the data plate and vessel records available, and confirm the requirement with your state’s pressure-vessel authority and qualified service team.
Do the compressor and the air lab have to be the same company?
No. Each provider contributes its own records to the same system. A provider not on FD Maintain can be covered by uploading its certificates as department records.
